What’s On View : Exploring Imagination, Memory, and 50 Years of Creative Partnership

Our galleries are alive this month with two incredible exhibitions that invite visitors to explore imagination, memory, and the enduring spirit of creation.

In the Front Gallery: Joseph Rowell — The Codex of Primordial Memory

Joseph Rowell’s exhibition The Codex of Primordial Memory is an immersive journey into myth, archetype, and transformation. Through a dynamic blend of illustration, sculpture, and layered storytelling, Rowell bridges the worlds of alchemy, mythology, and psychology.

His process moves from intuitive mark-making to fully realized works that feel discovered rather than created. Using charcoal, ink, watercolor, gouache, and large-scale cardboard sculpture, Rowell builds entire imaginative worlds—each piece an excavation of the subconscious. Visitors are drawn into a space where discovery and creation intertwine, evoking both ancient memory and fresh invention.

In the Anne White Gallery: Together in Art — 50 Years of Rudy and Lynell Hilt

In celebration of a remarkable milestone, Together in Art: 50 Years of Rudy and Lynell Hilt honors the shared journey of two artists whose partnership has spanned five decades. From their early days at the Philadelphia College of Art to years spent in Sedona’s vibrant arts community—and now here in Lynchburg—the Hilts have continuously inspired one another across mediums including jewelry, stained glass, sculpture, and painting.

This retrospective not only showcases their individual talents but also highlights the harmony, curiosity, and creative dialogue that have defined their artistic lives together. Each piece speaks to their deep collaboration and to a lifetime dedicated to exploration and craft.

Artist Talk & Community Connection

Our recent Saturday Artist Talk following First Friday brought art lovers together for an intimate look into the artists’ creative processes. Visitors were captivated by their stories, insights, and the passion behind each piece. If you missed it, don’t worry—there are more inspiring exhibitions and events ahead.

Stay tuned for our next show, and don’t miss the chance to experience the art and community that make Artistica a place where creativity thrives.
