New in the Galleries This August: Sculptural Power and Elemental Beauty

This August, the Academy Center of the Arts presents two powerful exhibitions that speak to transformation—of material, of memory, and of spirit. Whether through the tactile language of wood or the layered depth of encaustic wax, these artists offer work that resonates in both form and meaning.

Up Front Gallery – Eugene Archie

Dates: August 1 – 29

Eugene Archie, a self-taught wood sculptor from Amherst, Virginia, brings over two decades of practice to this solo exhibition. His work begins where others might see an end—transforming discarded driftwood into dynamic sculptural forms. Influenced by nature, ancestry, and spiritual reflection, Archie approaches each piece with intention and care.

What began as carving wooden necklaces has grown into an evolving body of work marked by power and presence. These sculptures offer a grounded, organic energy—perfect for those looking to add a meaningful and natural element to their home or collection.

Ann White Gallery – Wax, Wind, & Fire

Dates: August 1 – 29

This group exhibition brings together five encaustic artists—Amanda Smith, Christine Rooney, Giselle Gautreau, Gina Louthian-Stanley, and Gail Haile—whose works are united by material and inspired by nature, transformation, and inner reflection.

Through varied techniques—layered wax, monotype printmaking, photography, and intuitive mark-making—each artist explores themes of connection, memory, and place. From map-inspired abstractions to meditative altarpieces, the exhibition creates a sensory experience that invites slow looking and deeper engagement.

Collecting with Intention

Art has the ability to ground a space, spark thought, and elevate the everyday. These exhibitions offer works that bring not just aesthetic value, but also narrative and depth. Whether you're collecting with intention or finding a piece that simply speaks to you, the works on view this month are thoughtful additions to any space.

All works are available for purchase through Artistica.shop, where you can explore both collections and support the artists behind them.
