The Artistic Vision of Anthony Bowes: A Journey Through Oil Painting
"The Blue Ridge Mountains have always been an endless source of inspiration for me. Their timeless beauty and constant change of light and atmosphere is like watching a grand drama unfold. In my most recent body of work, I have sought to capture the very essence of these qualities while drawing attention to the beauty of God’s creation.
My approach to painting is about remaining true to the feeling a scene evokes, rather than a literal reproduction of what I see. Distilling the landscape; emphasizing certain elements while intentionally removing distractions that might take away from the main idea. The goal is to have my paintings speak to a deeper experience, one that resonates with the viewer on a visceral level, inviting them to feel what I felt in that moment.
My process involves on-location study of the subject, multiple stages of redesign; beginning with a loose framework and then refining; allowing the work to evolve until it embodies the mood and impression I aim to convey. I use color and form deliberately, heightening contrasts or simplifying compositions to draw focus and create a stronger narrative. Ultimately, these paintings are not just representations of the Blue Ridge Mountains—they are an exploration of how we experience God’s natural world. It is my hope that they invite the viewer to pause and reflect on the landscape in a way that is both intimate and expansive; capturing the restless beauty our Blue Ridge Mountains."
